Micro-Needling is one of the latest beauty trends promising glowing, baby-soft skin in addition to vast improvements to pigmentation, fine lines, and acne-scarring by clever use of your body’s collagen. But is it worth the hype? Many are wondering “can I trust micro-needling at any spa near me?” At Camelot Spa Seven Villa, we explore the ins and outs of this innovative treatment and what you should consider before making a booking.

What is Micro-Needling?

Micro-Needling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure using a derma-roller with small needles to create a controlled injury underneath the skin’s surface and induce the body to respond through the formation of new tissue layers. It is a form of collagen induction therapy, meaning it stimulates collagen production to improve the plumpness of the skin as well as to promote skin healing and elastin fibre production. In addition, it introduces new capillaries for an improved blood supply which causes the skin to plump and thicken. It is specifically designed to target fine lines, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and the improvement of the skin’s tone and texture.

How does Micro-Needling work?

Before starting, the skin is thoroughly cleansed to prevent any chance of infection and a topical numbing cream is applied for 30 minutes. The treatment itself involves tiny micro-point needles closely spaced gliding across the affected skin areas creating micro-wounds to stimulate collagen and skin healing.

The procedure time can be anything from 75 min to 2 hrs and the down time is minimal, so you’ll be able to return to work the very next day. The full recovery time occurs between 5-7 days, but the duration of the results lasts an impressive 24-30 months!

At Camelot Spa, we recommend a total of 4 treatments but you will see results after the very first treatment. Due to the risk of infection with unskilled or untrained techniques and poor hygiene, it is important to do your research for a reputable spa and skilled therapists (definitely don’t just type in “the closest spa near me” and go to the first one on the list!).

What are the results of Micro-Needling?

The most common benefits of Micro-Needling include:

  • Improved skin tone and texture through increased collagen and elastic
  • Can improve appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Can improve appearance of pigmentation
  • Can improve acne scars

As to the truth of these claims, according to a 2009 study, over 80% of participants reported a vast improvement in their acne scars, while a more recent 2020 comprehensive review of numerous similar studies concluded that micro-needling is an effective treatment for acne scarring overall.

Additionally, a 2017 study found that 41% of participants achieved vast improvement in pigmentation areas (in both size and area).

In terms of wrinkles, fine lines and improved tone and texture (skin rejuvenation), several studies found Micro-Needling to be very effective in providing “an overall youthful appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, reducing pore size, more suppleness, and elasticity”.

Who shouldn’t get Micro-Needling?

As with any other spa treatment, there are a few contra-indications to Micro-Needling including:

  • An active skin infection
  • Active acne
  • Have open wounds or sunburn
  • Have had recent radiation therapy
